Escape to the Skirrid: Why Wonderful Escapes at Wern-y-Cwm Farm is the UK’s Best-Kept Wellness Secret
In the shadow of the Holy Mountain, the Skirrid, sits a 30-acre sanctuary that feels worlds away from the crazy digital obsession of modern life.
Wonderful Escapes at Wern-y-Cwm Farm isn’t your typical clinical spa or boutique hotel; it’s a living creative project where luxury meets nature in the wild, rugged spirit of Monmouthshire. Whether you are joining a guided group or booking the space for a private getaway, the "Wonderful effect" is real. Here is why our little bit of heaven is just the best place to reset.
1. The Power of "Blue and Green" Therapy
Once of the farm’s most beautiful spots is the Wellness Garden with its natural swimming pool. Filtered by plants rather than chemicals, a dip here is a sensory wake-up call. Combined with the panoramic views over to Gloucestershire, the environment naturally lowers cortisol levels. Science calls it "forest bathing," but here, it just feels like calm.
2. The Great Barn: A Space for Breath
The heart of the wellness experience is the Great Barn. With its impressive oak beams and eco-heated floors, it is a cathedral for movement. Whether you’re flowing through a sun salutation as the light streams through the cartdoors or lying still during a sound bath, the acoustics and atmosphere of the barn make every breath feel deeper.
3. Off-Grid Luxury
Wellness shouldn't mean discomfort. After a day of hiking the Skirrid (with a private route across the farm), you can retreat to the sauna, chat by a roaring fire or firepit or gather around the farmhouse table for a nourishing meal. In Wales we say, "feel the hwyl" and experience a deep, emotional state of joy, passion, and enthusiasm. It is a uniquely Welsh concept that captures a sense of belonging and mindfulness.
How to Host Your Own DIY Wellness Retreat
We are totally flexible, so you don’t have to wait for an official retreat to join. Why not gather a group of friends or family and curate your own restorative stay? This might be for a family, to celebrate a landmark birthday, for your friend’s hen or stag stay, or for company bonding.
Here’s how:
Sunrise on the Skirrid: Start your first morning with a silent hike to the summit via our private route, maybe taking a thermos to enjoy at the top.
Book our amazing Holistic Therapist: Ensure each guest has time to fully relax with a massage, Reiki or Reflexology in our stunning treatment room. Our list of therapies can be found here.
Digital Detox: Put devices away and read or play games in the greenhouse. Prepare and perform a mini play or concert in the grass amphitheatre.
Enjoy Contrast Therapy: Spend 15 minutes in the sauna followed by a (brave) plunge into the natural pool to boost your circulation and immune system.
Be mindful in nature: Walk the farm with a copy of our wildflower, bee and butterfly surveys, ticking off your finds and immersing yourself. Visit the beehives and buy honey from the honesty bar, for a true taste of this land.
Nourish from the Soil: Pick veg or fruit from our gardens or forage across the farm (using our reference books), then visit local suppliers to stock up on local produce to reduce your food miles. Recommendations are found here.
Where you would like to book a supplier - be that a yoga teacher, gong bath, guided hike, foraging experience, etc - we are happy to help and have some incredible souls working here regularly. There are so many options, look here for the list, then let us know what you are looking for and we will make the arrangements for you.
We can cater or leave you to self-cater in line with your budget.
