celebration holidays

Wern-Y-Cwm and The Great Barn offer an incredible space for your stay on site, self-managed wedding. We are not a wedding venue per say, but what could be nicer than renting the farm and enjoying time with your close family and friends to celebrate your marriage vows (which you will have taken elsewhere).

With open fires and underfloor heating, you might be looking for a cosy and romantic autumn or winter wedding with swathes of velvet, deep berry coloured table dressing, candles and roasting chestnuts over roaring fire bowls.

Whatever your plans, Wern-Y-Cwm offers you the open spaces for as much outdoor activity as you may wish for, but with the added peace of mind that whatever the weather, The Great Barn is as big as a huge marquee but with so much more splendour and character and without the  huge price tag and set up fees.

Or your dream day may be in spring when the wildflower meadows are at their best and your photos include walking through fields of buttercups with half a dozen pretty brides’ maids, scattering petals from their baskets. Maybe your perfect wedding is in high summer, watching your friends have long lazy conversations in the shade, with games, croquet and speeches on the lawn and a traditional ice cream van along with cream teas?

Wern-Y-Cwm is a large furnished holiday let which is suitable for you to hire for your landmark celebration. We do not offer wedding packages or have a wedding license but are very happy to help advise you on how to make your wedding week-end celebration special. Here are some ideas of how you could make the farm work for you:

1. Simple and lovely, self-managed with all friends and family staying on site

You want to get your loved ones together to witness your big day somewhere special. You won’t be inviting the whole world. You rent the Farmhouse and if you need more space, add the cottage in. You rent the barn for just one night. You enjoy the preparations with your close friends picking flowers from the hedgerows, dress the barn, make the wedding favours and cook the feast. You book the celebration in a local chapel or registry office or tick the legal side off before you arrive and have a homemade celebration of promises. Your special feast is in The Great Barn where you enjoy the rest of your evening in style, finishing off with dancing the night away in the disco den. The next day you enjoy a long walk or lazy start, followed by a delicious Sunday lunch or BBQ on the terrace. Your party enjoys all the benefits of staying at Wern-Y-Cwm with you and helping you clear up afterwards.

Estimated cost:

The Hire of the Farmhouse, maybe the cottage plus the Barn for 1 night. Bring your own food and wine. Alternatively, we can help you arrange a caterer to suit your budget for this type of smaller more intimate wedding.

Potential numbers:

Up to 20 people in the farmhouse, and a maximum of 7 in the cottage.

2. A wedding feast and reception in The Great Barn, with family staying on site

What could be simpler than being on site to oversee the wedding preparations. Maybe arriving a few days earlier with your close family and friends, enjoying the build-up and discovering the local area. As more people arrive you book the extra accommodation of the cottage, if needed. Your day guests will arrive for the Wedding Party in The Great Barn. They will either live or be staying locally. You will have your wedding service in Abergavenny or one of the local chapels, or earlier in the month. You could arrange a champagne reception on the terrace, followed by a sit down gourmet dinner and dancing to a great band. When carriages are called, you and your close friends will continue to party late into the night in the disco den. The next day you may wish to continue the celebrations with a BBQ or hog roast with those who have stayed over.

Estimated cost:

The hire of the Farmhouse, maybe the cottage plus the Barn for a minimum 2 nights to set up and take down. Modest additional fee per day per guest, caterers, band, additional table & chair hire (over 72 place settings), table setting hire, parking & site attendant and wedding planner (for parties of over 50 people).

Potential numbers:

Up to 20 people in the farmhouse, plus up to 7 in the cottage, plus extra day guests up to a maximum of 72 using our own tables and place settings, or 120 seated with additional hire.

3. A mini festival, buffet style wedding with glamping village on site (or external accommodation)

Invite all your friends and family, for a memorable weekend with street food style catering, fire pits, outdoor games and country walks. With closest friends and family staying in the farmhouse, and additional guests or support team in the cottage. Your additional guests could stay in a specially set up glamping village within easy reach of The Great Barn. Additional toilets and showers would need to be hired in line with numbers.

Please note that we limit the number of larger events or weddings we will host per annum out of respect to our neighbours’ quiet enjoyment. There is a strict music policy and we will be encouraging the use of silent discos.

Estimated cost:

The hire of the Farmhouse, Cottage, plus Barn for 3 or more nights. Modest additional fee per guest per day , the hire of the yurts, showers and WCs, caterers, music, parking & site attendants and wedding planner.

Potential numbers:

Up to 200 people across all areas of accommodation, with not more than 20 in the farmhouse and 7 in the cottage.

Have a look at some of the questions we get asked frequently. If there's anything else you need to know, just drop us an email!

Yes, if you hire the farmhouse and the cottage, you may hire The Great Barn for one night or more if you are opting for a self-managed wedding and need to decorate and tidy up.

No, we don’t have a license. We recommend you get married in your local registry office, or at one of the stunning local churches. We have a beautiful little church in Llandewi Skirrid and you may be able to arrange your wedding there. It is a short drive or longer walk to Wern-Y-Cwm.

You could arrange a wedding blessing or humanist wedding outdoors. There are numerous beautiful spots for you to do this, either with the whole wedding party or with your close friends and family who are staying on site before the rest of your guests arrive.

No, we do not charge corkage. You may bring your own wine, but we request you take empties away too!

You are responsible for arranging your  caterers, but we prefer you use our recommended ones because they know the property. We are not a wedding venue, but we are happy to help with advice.

For a Saturday wedding party, we request a minimum of 3 nights booking, so you may access The Great Barn from 4pm on the Thursday night if you are leaving on the Sunday, or by 4pm on the Friday night if you are leaving on the Monday. (We request 4-night bookings on Bank Holiday weekends). For a weekday wedding, we request a minimum 2-night booking, so you may access the venue from 4pm the day before your wedding party and would need to vacate by 10am the day after your party, unless you book an extra night.

Out of consideration for our neighbours we are asking for all music to be turned off at 11pm. There is a disco den in the farmhouse which is suitable for an 'after party' for those staying in the farmhouse. Here you may dance the night away if the music is kept inside with doors closed. But only those staying on site may enter.

Out of consideration for our neighbours we are asking for all music to be turned off at 11pm.

Sadly not, unless you have SILENT fireworks, with no plastic parts. Wern-Y-Cwm is set amongst fields of sheep and cattle, not to mention being dog friendly. Fireworks are not country friendly.

Yes, but we offer a candle service to ensure they are safely prepared. You would be responsible for making sure they are all extinguished safely.

We would prefer you picked wildflowers from the meadows or threw flower petals and this was kept outside the venue in the grassy areas. But we are open to ideas, please discuss with us.

Yes, we have a stunning bridal suite at the top of the Farmhouse, we call it the Peacock Loft.

Yes, including the bridal suite, we have 10 bedrooms, all doubles or triples. We can sleep 27 people in the house (including z-beds). We can also accommodate glamping in the grounds and there is a huge amount of local Air B&B, hotels and holiday lets that we can recommend.

Yes, we have many friends in the area with amazing holiday lets, from gypsy caravans, to cottages, to local hotels. There is plenty of local accommodation and taxi firms to ensure your guests may all stay within a few minutes of Wern-Y-Cwm.

We are happy to offer viewings of the venue, but since we are generally booked up we would like to keep all viewings to the first Friday of every month from 8am to 2pm. Should this be totally impossible for you, please let us know and we will try to offer another time. Bookings are strictly by appointment please.

Yes, we permit up to 4 well behaved, regular sized dogs at the property. They should be kept in the farmhouse kitchen where there is a dog pen in situ.

You must arrange all of your suppliers. We have some amazing local caterers, photographers and florists that we would thoroughly recommend although they are not on commission in any way.

We have only just finished the huge renovation project of The Great Barn here at Wern-Y-Cwm, but we have had the farmhouse and cottage working as luxury furnished holiday lets for the past 3 years. Wern-Y-Cwm is a private house, which is let as a furnished holiday let, with additional entertaining space for events in The Great Barn.

we'd love to have you for a visit!
